The Royals were at the Wissahickon Skating Club last Saturday for the last game before the first official game of the season WSC Logobegan. The rink is a really old arena near the outskirts of Philly. WSC played a good game, but it wasn’t quite good enough for the boys. I made several videos before the game, and below is one I made of the interior of the ice arena.

The end score ended up something like 2-8. The Royals actually lead them into the third period at 8-0. The Wissahickon Skate Club did a fine job of holding them back, but it wasn’t good enough to get a win, but it was good enough to keep from being shut out on their home ice. You just got to hate that.

Jr Blue Hens vs Reading Jr Royals

The last game of the Jr Blue Hen Tournament for the Royals was against the home team. Being the home team, certainly has its advantages, the primary one in this game, seemed to be having the refs that were surely biased. The second being the annoying mullet man fan of the Hens, who carried a lacross stick and insisted on banging it to show his support for his team. This duffus, then meandered down to the Royals section of the bleachers to bless us with his presence. He should have wandered back to his village.

Jr Blue Hens vs Reading Jr Royals

The game was marked with many uncalled violations that even I with my untrained eye was able to see. The first goal was by the Blue Hens at 9:03 in the first period on a power play. The next Hen score came at 506 in the first to make it 2:0. The second period saw the Blue Hens score one more time and the Royals were able to get one in as well. I did not get the specific time due to being distracted by the village idiot. However, the idiot did serve to incite the Royals fans to a thunderous foot stomping on the bleachers when the Royals scored their only goal of the game. The Royals again ended the game by taking out their goaling, but were still unable to score. The Blue Hens win 3:1 to grab second place in the tournament.

Pennsbury Falcons vs Reading Jr Royals

After playing the previous game against the Bethlehem Blast, which ended at about half past 11am, the Royals played the Pennsbury Falcons at 430pm in the Rust arena. The second game for the Royals in the Delaware Jr Blue Hen tournament. The Falcons had a bit more time to recoup, having played and beat the Hens the night before.

Pennsbury Hockey LogoThe hockey game started at the scheduled time. The first goal of the game came from the Falcons at 953. The next goal again came from the Falcons at 823. Both of these goals were scored while the players were scuffling for the puck in front of the goalie. The period ended with a the Falcons leading 2:0. The next period saw the Falcons score one more time but the Royals remained scoreless. The last goal of the came came from the Falcons as they dish up a 4:0 loss to the Royals.

The next event for the Royals was scheduled for 845am the following morning when the PeeWee B teams participated in a skills competition. 00 and I did not make it to this event, due to the effects of the Daylight savings change. Strangely my cell did not change automatically. Inspite of not having zero-zeor in attendance, the Royals managed to get first place in the skills competition.

The last event for the boys was a 1245 game against the Jr Blue Hens in the Gold arena.

Reading Jr Royals vs Bethlehem Blast

This past weekends Delaware Jr Blue Hens:Tim Roman & Paul Guyer Memorial Tournament was a good weekend of hockey for all the teams that participated in the event. The Olympic size arenas of the University of Delaware supplied the boys with some excellent ice conditions. The Tournament began Friday night with games at 420pm in both arenas, however, the Royals did not have a game until the following morning 10am in the Rust arena when they played the Bethlehem Blast.

Game 1 Reading Jr Royals Vs Bethlehem Blast

One of the first things I noticed is that the Blast have a player that we have not seen before. A Zero-Zero, who is taller than the Refs. It was something to see when the zero’s collided.

The first score in the youth hockey game came at 620 in the second period by number 62 of the Royals.  The next score of the game came again from number 62 at 3:08 in the second period. The last score of the game came at 3:40 of the third period from the Royals.

The blast ended the game by taking out their goalie, but were still unsuccessful at scoring. The final score 3:0 Royals.

The next game was scheduled for 430 that same afternoon against the Pennsbury Falcons who beat the Jr Blue Hens the night before.

Exton Kings Vs the Reading JR Royals at the Exton PowerPlay arena.

March 5, 2007 at 3:04 am | Posted in Hockey Arenas, Hockey Losses, non-league games | Leave a comment

Saturday, March 3rd the hockey game was on the Kings home ice located in Exton, just off of rt 100. The arena has very nice facilities which include a gaming area, snack bar, and an adequate proshop.  As bad as the BodyZone proshop is, if a little bit of effort was made, it would be easy to be much better than the Exton PowerPlay Arena Proshop. If not for the TV that the Proshop staff were absorbed in, the Hockey Proshop would have been just about like the closet of a proshop of the BodyZone.

Another thing that I dislike about the arena is the blind spots from the spectator seating area which make it difficult to see the corners. One good thing about the arena that really has nothing to do with the arena, but they played some really hard rock roll during the breaks. One last thing that distinguishes this arena for me is that this is the arena that a King father broke the window of one of the upstairs doors when his son was injured in a game several years ago.

Exton Kings VS Reading JR Royals

1420 of the first period the Kings score. This really bites, because of the annoying air horn that is played when ever the home team scores. 1325 the Royals score on a breakaway, making it 1:1. The next goal in the game came at 818 when a King broke past the defense of ZeroZero and scored, making it 2:1.  The next came at 500 from the Royals, then and at 355 again from the Royals as well as the next goal at 307. The Royals were doing an exceedingly good job of getting the puck to center and then having a player waiting infront of the goal who tapped it in to the goal. The period ended 2:4 with 14:10 shots on goal.

The beginning of the second period saw a bit of confusion with the penalty board. It started out with a penalty for the Kings, who soon scored at 1411 in the period, making it 3:4. The penalty was then changed to be a  Royal penalty. I was still a little confused about that one. The next goal of the game came at 447 when the freaking air horn sounded again for the Kings who scored on another Power play making it 4:4.

About this time a bit of pushing and hard hitting was going on, and parents(mothers) from both sides were exchanging some comments. The second period ended with a score of 4:4 and 27:13 shots on goal. The next goal of the game came at 1312 when the Kings made it 5:4.  As the clock ran down, the Royals tried a last ditch effort to score, and took out their goalie, which was ineffective, and resulted in the last score of the game, making it a 6:4 loss with 38:25 shots on goal.

Hershey Bears Rink of Dreams

The PeeWee B Jr Royals will be playing on the Hershey Bears Giant Center against the Fredrick Fury, before the game on February 25th at around 1230pm. To be able to do this, each Youth hockey team had to agree to sell 75 tickets to the bears game. Tickets prices range form 10.50 to in the 200 level to 15.50 in the 100 level. This comes out to about 5 tickets per player per team. 00 had done this quite a while ago, when the old Bears arena was still being used. So this aught to be a real treat for the players. If you have time, stop on in, or better yet let me know and I will see if I can get you some tickets. The Youth Hockey game prior to the Bears game is free.

Aston Ice Works Thanksgiving Tournament

Aston Header Logo

Aston Ice works is a nice arena with four rinks that have adequate seating. It also is the only arena that we have played in that has the hockey equipment cleaning service. Check out the site it is a very impressive piece of machinery. Anyway, it was quite a disappointing weekend for the team. They played three games and scored a combined total of 3 points, which was scored in the second game of the tournament. The first and last game of the tournament were scoreless. Inspite of the losses, the boys played some really good hockey, and had moments that were fluid, and they seemed to be playing as a real hockey team. In particular I remember one play in the last game that they actually came down the ice and passed the puck almost four times and even got a shot off. So it was unsuccessful, at least they tried.

I again had really crappy Internet directions, which I obtained from Yahoo maps via a link from Iceworks website. The directions had me coming down 100 to 202 then to us 3. The directions did not say which direction to take on us 3, then it said to take South Chester Rd, which was not labeled. What the directions should have said was turn onto 352 then onto 496. When I was unable to find South Chester Rd, I called the arena, and received quite adequate directions. Seems like they might want to update their site with better directions. The Polish in me just never learns, so I keep getting lost when I use those unreliable Internet directions.

The kids and their mom staid over at the Holiday Inn Select in Wilmington. Seemed like a long way to travel to me, but that is what she chose. It does have a really nice pool for the kids to swim in during their down time. I just wonder if she made the reservation through the Iceworks affiliate link. Have to put one of mine on this site for her to use.

Will be adding some Youtube posts to liven up this blog, in an effort to make it a little entertaining…

Sunbury Stampede | Another Country

November 20, 2006 at 1:55 am | Posted in Hockey Losses, non-league games | Leave a comment

Yesterday, 11/18/2006 the boys traveled 2 hours deep into coal country to Sunbury, PA the home of the Stampede. Traveling here reminded me of traveling to the 1000 Island region of Canada due to its small town feel. Upon entering the Sunbury community center, it almost seems like you are entering a ski lodge of a small Pocono ski resort, with the smell of burning wood in the fireplace and the hot chocolate. A cozy little arena, with a terrible view. The one thing that I remember about this arena from last time we played there, is the metal strip at the arena entrance that threatens to dull any skates that happen to graze across it. Which as I recall happened to Zero-Zero last time, a mistake he did not repeat.

Anyway, the trip to the arena was really educational for the kids, we had a little discussion about the coal mines as we drove through the burning town of Centralia and through the other coal towns such as Shamokin and Ashland. We were unable to find the burned out dump truck that we had seen on a previous trip but did spot some smoking fissures.

So we made it to the arena a little more than an hour ahead of schedule. Time enough for the boy to put his skates on and get a little ice time. Free ice time, you got to love that. I was able to indulge in one of the snack bar’s hot dogs, which was quite tasty inspite of not being a slaw dog, which is one of my favorites. My daughter had one of their soft pretzels, and if I had a pretzel list, that would be on it.

So its game time. The arena has the worst seating. Well not so much the seating(they are the same cold metal that is most arenas) but more like the view. The supports for the building block quite a bit of the view, so that almost half of the game was very difficult to view. It almost made me appreciate the Voices arena at the Bodyzone, which also has quite pitiful seating.

The Game

Over all the boys played really well, with a definite increase in passing. At the end of the first period the Royals were in the lead 0:1. Come the second period, the Stampede took the lead and maintained well into the third, when the Royals tied it up. Just at the bell, the Royals got a shot off, but the refs, did not call it. Quite unuasually, 5 minutes was put on the clock for over time, which resulted in no scores for either side. So we then go into a shoot out, where the stampede got 3 and the Royals got a dissappointing 1. End score 5:3.
The end score does not reflect anything but what was on the score board. The boys were robbed. But even still they played well, and as someone once said its not whether you “win or loose, its how you play the game that counts”.
Another unusually thing about the game was the number of penalties. There were 3 penalties during the whole game, which is closer to the number of penalties they get in one period. These refs must not have had to watch the video on the new standards. Either that or they needed to get new glasses.

Delaware JR Blue Hens Vs Reading Royals

Yea A Win!!

Delaware Blue Hens LogoThe Reading Royals finally broke their losing streak, by beating the Blue Hens 3:5. Ashamed it was a non-league game. As I was not in attendance, there are not any details about the game available unless anyone who reads this would like to write a post…drop me a line or make a comment. 00 did not get any goals, but according to his mom, he played a good game. One Royal ended up going to the hospital for an injured shoulder. Hope he will be in working order, and did not sustain any long term injuries.

Reading Junior Royals Bteam

Into the season 3 games already. Won all three. Yesterday they played York, and won, but should not have. They were out shot about 30 to 15 shots on goal. Inspite of Yorks smaller players, and better playing, they won. York was continually passing to each other and it seemed playing far better than the Royals. They deserved to loose. I would rather they loose now, since it was a non league game then later on when it counts. Hopefully they will learn from the game instead of gloat. The coach was not at all happy about the teams performance.

OO had a pretty good game. No goals, or assists, but one penalty. However, I thought he showed a lot of enthusiasm, because he seemed to be really hustling. This may not have been the best thing to do either, because I am not sure if he was playing in his zone or not. He did seem to be all over the place.

Well atleast his hockey bag does not stink anymore. I took all of his clothes out Thursday night after practice and washed everything. His one shirt smelled so bad, the team made him throw it out of the locker room. I believe they have gotten used to the cat urine smell of his skates, because no one complains about that any more. We also put new laces on, but will need new ones, because I got the same size. Must remember to get the largest size they have.  The size he has now is acceptable, but it leaves very little to double knot. I believe he would like to wrap the laces around his boot.

They have also scheduled their seasons final tournement for Lake Placid.

The team manager quit, because her son was moved up to the A team. Apparently they had complained a lot. He is not that much better than 00, but apparently it was a political move. Yes, even kids hockey is frought with the ugly head of politics.  After all not every one can be on the A team. I myself would rather be on the b team, because it seems like it is a lot less pressure to perform. The kids might actually enjoy themselves. Imagine that, enjoying childhood.
